Where in the world?: In the northern hemisphere, tundra is found in the Arctic, encircling the North Pole and extending south to parts of Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Greenland. In the southern hemisphere, tundra is located on isolated islands off the coast of Antarctica and on the Antarctic peninsula.
How’s the weather?: Chilly and very dry – it rains less than 10 inches each year in the tundra. Winters are long and cold – temperatures can drop to -50°F! Summers only last a couple months and during that short time temperatures rise to only 50°F, thawing the top layer of the permafrost and allowing a few plants to grow.
